What are
Many people have a gap under the arch of their foot when they are in a standing position. People who have flat feet or fallen arches either have no arch, or it is very low gap a significant number of people with flat feet experience no pain and have no problems and others, however, may experience pain. Some people develop flat feet during their childhood, while others may find that the problem develops as they age, or after a pregnancy.
Causes
Children who have flat feet may be caused by a condition called tarsal coalition. Tarsal coalition is a condition where two or more of the bones in the foot fuse together, limiting motion and often leading to a flat foot. Flat feet can also be caused by fallen arches. Years of wear and tear can weaken the tendon that is responsible for shaping the arch. Fallen arches can also be caused by injury such as inflammation.
Symptoms
Symptoms might be pain in the ankle, while another sign may be swelling. Symptoms in flat feet may vary and depend on the condition. The most common signs and symptoms of flat feet are pain in the inner side, the foot in general, the arch of the foot, the calf, back, and general lower area. People who have flat feet also experience stiffness in both feet. A person with flat feet might wear shoes unevenly and they might also have one or both feet flat on the ground.
Treatment
In some cases, treatment is not required. Some patients with flat feet may automatically align their limbs. A patient with flat feet might alleviate pain if they wear supportive well-fitted shoe. Fitted insoles or orthotics may help relieve the pressure from the arch and reduce pain in feet. Some experts may advise the patient to rest and avoid any activities until feet feel better. Also if patient is obese the doctor may advise the person to lose weight, which can help improve symptoms.
Prevention
To prevent flatfeet an individual should wear an orthodontic device to help the development of arches. Avoid excessive weight because obesity can increase your chances of developing flat feet. You should also rest your feet after standing for a long period of time. Diabetes increases your chances of developing flat feet, so you must control your blood sugar level. Also, exercise your foot and leg muscle so that you are less likely to develop flat feet.
